Unit 6: The Ups and Downs of Yo-yos

I liked this class because the teacher spoke about a singer´s song that is Chicago of Peter Cetera. This song has a part that say ''You know our love was meant to be'', with this, the professor made examples with '' meant '': He means  nothing to me. Here is the link of this beautiful song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGZYX1hwGeI

Unit 5: Smart Cars, Intelligent Highways

In this unit we talk about smart cars. One of the most convenient aspects about smart cars is their ability. You can use GPS navigation device and computerized maps. Also, it has a problem. This is that the voice controls might prove to be as distracting as chatting on the phone. This unit was very interesting.

Unit 6. The Ups and Downs of Yo-Yos.

The Ups and Downs of Yo-Yos. I think that the yo-yo fad has existed way too long before the twenty century. According to what this topic says, the first historical record of yo-yos is from Greece around 500 B.C. Made of wood, clay, and metal. New Words. Tiny: Something very small. It's a synonym of miniature. urns:  It has  the same meaning of Vases. Aristocrats: The upper class, nobbles. Fled: Escaped, Ran away. Craze: Synosym of Fad.

Mastering the Law of Gravity. It is about Master Yuen Wo-ping. He is an action choreographer, and film director. He has worked in more than fifty movies.

Unit 2. Urban Legends.

Urban Legends. In this reading I was able to see  many things about Urban Legends. They are contemporary examples of folklore. The name Urban Legend was invented by Richard Dowson in the 1960s. In the Dominican Republic we have our own culture, so do Urban Legends. Since I was a child I have been listening to people talking about  El Vacá, La Ciguapa, And El Cajuelo. Many of them still think they exist, but I don't. In addition, I think there are just invented by the people.

Unit 3. The Name Game.

The Name Game . It is about how people around the world struggle to find the names of their companies.  It is difficult for them because they want a catchy and original one. In additon,  we have to be careful when choosing  the names of our company.

Did the Chinese discover America? Comment: In this class the teacher talked about the vocabulary , read the unit and spoke about the supposed discoverers of America. This unit is very interesting because it tells us about the supposed people who discovered America before Christopher Columbus. There have long been hints that Columbus was not the first explorer to come to the New World from the Old. Evidence suggests that the Viking leif Ericson crossed the Atlantic and visited North America in the eleventh century.  According to the book there are claims that the Phoenicians, the Irish, the Polynesians, and others made the journey before 1492. Now, an amateur historian, Gavin Menzies, has theorized that the Chinese made the journey too. According to Menzies, the Chinese explored Australia 350 years before Captain Cook, circled the world a century before Magellan, and arrived on American shores 71 years before Christopher Columbus.

The ups and Downs of Yo-yos (brief summary) Today when the word yo-yo is mentioned, most people think of the yo-yo fad of the 1950s and 1960s. The first historical record of yo-yos is, however, from Greece around 500 B.C.  Yo-yos were fashionable symbols of weath; many were made of crystal, jade, or ivory and were decorated with silver, gold, and precious stones. The toy was also called a Coblenz, after the German city to which many of the F rench aristocrats fled. One the next few decades, however, yo-yo sales seemed to go up and down as often as the toy itself did. And in 1999, the A&E network named the yo-yo, one od the oldest known toys, as the greatest toy od the twentieth century. Vocabulary (definitions)           from internet -Urns: A  tall, rounded vase with a stem and base. -Tiny: V ery small. -Fled: R un away from a place or situation of danger. -Tycoon: A  wealthy, powerful person in bu...

The ups and Downs of Yo-yos -Unit 6

The Ups and Downs of Yo-yos (brief summary from the book) There are yo-yos (called discs by the Greeks) made of painted terracotta (clay), wood, and metal displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on in New York and at the National Museum of Greece in Athens.  There are also Greek urns that depict young people doing yo-yo tricks.  The next sighting of ancient yo-yos was among the Maya on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula about A.D. 700.  A yo-yo from this period is exhibited at the Anthropological Museum in Merida, Mexico. The yo-yo of this time was not just a child's plaything: it was also used by adults to relieve tension. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, another yo-yo fad swept across North America and much of the world. Ducan released a series of popular new models that appealed to baby boomers, including the Satellite, Butterfly, Rainbow. and Imperial.  Sales reached an all-time high in 1962.  At the height of the craze, Duca...
